Flight Instructor · CFI Preparation

CFI preparation
in Maryland.

Prepare to teach with a plan for ground knowledge, lesson delivery, and flight demonstration skills at Montgomery County Airpark (KGAI). Discuss prerequisites and availability with an appropriately qualified independent instructor member.

Build explanations as well as flying skills.

Flight instructor preparation asks you to turn your own pilot knowledge into useful instruction. A lesson needs a clear objective, an explanation a student can follow, a demonstration, and a way to recognize whether the student understands. Preparing those lessons is a substantial part of the work.

Begin by reviewing your certificates, ratings, aeronautical knowledge, and recent flying with an instructor qualified to provide the required CFI training. Build a plan that combines self-study, supervised ground preparation, practice teaching, and aircraft work. CFI preparation is a separate goal from applying to teach as an already certificated club instructor.

Explain, demonstrate, and assess.

Lesson plans & learning

Prepare structured lessons, connect technical topics to practical flying, and practice adapting an explanation to a student’s experience. Work on the fundamentals of instruction and ways to check understanding.

Demonstration & analysis

Practice explaining and demonstrating the applicable maneuvers and procedures. Learn to identify common student errors and give a useful correction while managing the flight safely.

Ground and practical-test preparation

Review the required knowledge, endorsements, and proficiency areas. Ground preparation and practice teaching should support the practical test rather than being treated as an optional addition to flight time.

Review the instructor certificate requirements.

Confirm prerequisites with your instructor

Initial airplane CFI eligibility includes applicable age, pilot certificate, rating, knowledge-test, training, and endorsement requirements. Your certificates and intended instructor rating should be reviewed before selecting the training aircraft or budgeting the remaining preparation.

See 14 CFR 61.183 for eligibility and 14 CFR 61.187 for flight proficiency. Confirm the training instructor is qualified to provide the required initial CFI training.

Use an individual preparation budget

The estimator’s 20 flight and 40 ground hours are editable planning examples, not universal FAA minimums or a verified national average. A pilot who has already prepared lesson plans may need a different plan from someone beginning the ground work.

Review completed preparation, the aircraft needed for the intended rating, instructor availability, and practical-test arrangements. Aircraft suitability is assessed individually; the fleet list does not promise that every aircraft fits every CFI training requirement.

Budget for flight and ground instruction.

The CFI cost estimator shows aircraft rental and instructor time separately. Enter qualifying completed preparation and adjust the future ground work and aircraft hours. Add allowances for study resources, knowledge testing, and practical-test expenses as appropriate.

The calculator uses $50 per instructor hour as a budget assumption. Confirm actual fees directly with the independent CFI. Both the student and instructor must be club members, and club aircraft instruction must be provided by an approved instructor with the applicable qualifications.

Preparation and instructor membership.

Do I have to finish in 20 flight hours?

No. That figure is an estimator example. The actual preparation depends on your qualifications, ground knowledge, ability to teach and demonstrate, recent proficiency, and your instructor’s assessment.

Can an existing CFI join the club?

Yes. Already certificated FAA instructors may apply for club membership and instructor authorization. They must complete the approval and aircraft checkout requirements before teaching club members.

Does CFI preparation guarantee instructor authorization?

No. Training toward a certificate and approval to teach in club aircraft are separate processes. Approved independent instructors must be club members and meet the club’s applicable qualification, checkout, and insurance requirements.
